The principal attractions are; three hundred square miles of rugged “moonscape” dotted with stone pyramids, weird cones, sweeping spirals and obelisks, created by nature, churches and monasteries built by the early Christian hermits. The majority of the rock cut churches are decorated with colorful frescos depicting scenes from the Holy Scriptures: They are the earliest examples of Christian religious art.
